We are focused on individuality and experience. Our objective is to deliver a
standard method of accessing art environments and creative activities
without disability’s being a barrier.

Our growth was driven by the needs of our users, thus EXISTENCE and the BALTIC have came together to offer dynamic descriptive exhibition tours with trained gallery educators, as well as programming for visitors with sensory differences.

The exhibit features clear labels, user-friendly instructions and a custom smartphone App that connects visitors to exhibition content via text or audio. Textured maps are also used to facilitate mobility and knowledge for sighted, low-vision, and blind users. 

Our visceral reactions are stimulated by sensory rich activities. They aid in learning and development by enhancing user concentration and coordination. They also support the regulation of the nervous system, improve the user’s ability to relax and provide opportunities for social skill development.

Smell

The sense of smell is closely tied to our memory and learning abilities. In fact, it has been shown that exposure to a range of odours can enhance our ability to retain information.

Particular fragrances can also trigger memories and emotions and ultimately have an impact on an individual’s mood, often inspiring feelings such as serenity, interest and exhilaration.

Sound

EXISTENCE has employed sound-absorbing materials to reduce noise levels and create a more comfortable listening environment.

The exhibit features ambient music and nature sounds to promote relaxation and engagement from visitors. Sound-producing equipment is also provided, including headphones and musical instruments.

Touch

The sense of touch is significant and essential to human development and wellbeing. With which, we primarily learn about our surroundings and form
emotional and social ties with people.

Touch stimulation is included throughout the exhibit, through the incorporation of carefully selected textured surfaces, soft textiles, and tactile objects. A projection-mapped sand table for visitors to explore is also featured.

Sight

The sense of sight enables us to move and interact with our surroundings, recognise and identify people and objects and perceive and interpret visual information.

We rely on sight to read, write, and comprehend spoken language, and it is therefore essential to many for both communication and learning.

Although EXISTENCE is an overly visual experience, we invite visitors to investigate a variety of sensory inputs. Only then may we begin to understand The Art of the Senses.

User needs were at the heart of our development. In order to fulfil our commitment to ensuring the exhibition space continues to not only meet the needs of those who use it, but also enrich their curiosity, problem-solving, and creativity. We will continuously assess EXISTENCE in response to feedback from users and their carers and adapt the space as appropriate.
